Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

An inherited safe with no combination, a dial that has drifted, a keypad that stopped responding: each has a proper way in that preserves the box. We open, service and reset safes for homes and small businesses in Oak Ridges, and explain how to keep the mechanism turning for the next owner.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceIt is minus fifteen, the wind is coming across the driveway, and the key will only go halfway into the deadbolt.

The fix

Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything.

Call (289) 210-9924Request a visit Home Lockout Service

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceAfter last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing.

The fix

Commercial doors carry hardware that most homes never see, and reading it correctly is the first skill of a business lockout. An aluminium storefront door usually has a narrow mortise cylinder driving a hookbolt deadlock or a paddle-operated deadlatch.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click.

The fix

Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairYou came home to find the front door standing open.

The fix

When a home is broken into, the locks are not the only thing that has changed hands. Keys hanging in the hall, a spare in a drawer, a garage remote on a visor or a house key on a stolen car's ring may all be gone.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe lock works, but only if you lean on the door with your hip while turning the key.

The fix

This service has a season here. The first wet fortnight of winter sends meltwater into keyways that freezes overnight, and doors on the north and shaded sides of a building stay iced the longest.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyThe renovation wrapped up in the spring.

The fix

Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours.

What the census means at the door

15%

Newer homes. About 15% of homes in Richmond Hill were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is new, garage entries, side doors and the front door were usually fitted at the same time but not always to the same key. Keying them alike is a small job that makes the household's ring simpler from the start.

57%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Richmond Hill (2021 Census).

Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

The fee for a visit in Oak Ridges is the same at any hour, and it is settled at the door after the locksmith has assessed the hardware. That order matters. Assess first, then price, then work, so you always know what is being done and what it costs before a tool comes out. There are no surprises added afterwards.

Richmond Hill and Jefferson

  • Explained first, always. Nothing gets removed, drilled or replaced until you know what and why. That rule holds for a small job as much as a full afternoon.

  • Hardware chosen with you. We show what we recommend and what else would do the job, and describe the differences in plain terms. You make the call.

  • Care for the finish. We match hardware finishes where we can, protect the door surface while working and leave no scuffs, filings or fingerprints behind.

Locksmith FAQ

Advice · (289) 210-9924

Could a jammed lock mean someone tampered with it?

Occasionally, but wear and weather are far more common. Signs that point to tampering are fresh scratches around the keyway, a plug that sits crooked, or debris such as glue or a broken tool tip inside, none of which appear from ordinary use. The locksmith looks for these during the inspection and says plainly what was found. If the cylinder has been damaged that way, it is replaced and, if you wish, the other doors are rekeyed.

What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?

Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van.

Can a frozen mailbox lock be opened without breaking it?

Usually, yes. A penetrating lubricant or a lock de-icer given a little time to work, combined with gentle movement of the key or a light pick, frees most iced-up compartment locks without forcing anything. Hot water is avoided, since it can refreeze inside the mechanism. Once it turns freely, the lock is inspected and, if it shows wear or damage, replaced with a fresh one lubricated as its own maker specifies, since a lock that has frozen once can repeat the pattern.

How long does a car lockout take once the locksmith arrives?

Confirming identification and looking the car over take a few minutes, and the opening itself is often the shortest part. A wedge-and-reach entry or a picked door cylinder on a common car is a matter of minutes; a frozen lock, a dead car battery or a car with hidden cylinders takes longer. Cutting and programming a replacement key is a separate stage that adds time, and you are given a sense of it before it starts.
