Locked out
Safely, right now
- Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
- Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
- Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
- Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
- Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- If your address was with the keys, treat the lock as known to whoever finds them.
- Don't leave a spare key anywhere outside while you wait, under the mat or elsewhere.
Living in a building in Jefferson means two kinds of doors: the suite door you control and the common doors the building manages. We service both, working within house rules on the outer hardware and giving your own door a cylinder, strike and closer that suit how the unit is actually used.

The fix, explained · Jefferson
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceIt is minus fifteen, the wind is coming across the driveway, and the key will only go halfway into the deadbolt.
The fix
Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceAfter last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing.
The fix
Commercial doors carry hardware that most homes never see, and reading it correctly is the first skill of a business lockout. An aluminium storefront door usually has a narrow mortise cylinder driving a hookbolt deadlock or a paddle-operated deadlatch.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click.
The fix
Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairYou came home to find the front door standing open.
The fix
When a home is broken into, the locks are not the only thing that has changed hands. Keys hanging in the hall, a spare in a drawer, a garage remote on a visor or a house key on a stolen car's ring may all be gone.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe lock works, but only if you lean on the door with your hip while turning the key.
The fix
This service has a season here. The first wet fortnight of winter sends meltwater into keyways that freezes overnight, and doors on the north and shaded sides of a building stay iced the longest.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyThe renovation wrapped up in the spring.
The fix
Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours.

What the census means at the door
15%
Newer homes. About 15% of homes in Richmond Hill were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.
57%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Richmond Hill (2021 Census).
Where housing types are mixed, the same lost-key call means different things. In a house, rekey every door on the property. In an apartment, rekey the suite door and check with management about the common entrance. The locksmith asks which it is first.

We plan visits around how people in Jefferson live. A shop wants the work done before opening or after close. A family wants a time when someone is home and the dog is put away. A landlord wants the unit done between tenants. Tell us the window that suits you and we build the day around it, then call when the van is on its way.
Explained first, always. Nothing gets removed, drilled or replaced until you know what and why. That rule holds for a small job as much as a full afternoon.
Hardware chosen with you. We show what we recommend and what else would do the job, and describe the differences in plain terms. You make the call.
Care for the finish. We match hardware finishes where we can, protect the door surface while working and leave no scuffs, filings or fingerprints behind.

Locksmith FAQ
Our storefront lock freezes every winter. What do you do about it?
On the day, the cylinder is thawed with lock de-icer or gentle warmth, never hot water or a flame near aluminium, and dried before a moisture-shedding dry lubricant goes in. To stop the pattern, the keyway gets a cover on the most exposed door, salt is kept off the bottom rail, and the closer is adjusted for cold fluid so the door still latches. A cylinder that freezes yearly may be better placed or shielded.
Can the locksmith start before the police have finished?
The door is left as found until the police have seen it or said they will not attend. What can happen in the meantime is planning: the locksmith can look at the damage, photograph it, measure for hardware and prepare the temporary securing so that the moment the scene is released the work begins. Nothing is removed or moved before then, because the marks on the door are part of the report.
Why does the deadbolt scrape or need a shove to throw?
Two causes cover most cases. Either paint has built up on the faceplate, the bolt or the strike so the bolt drags across it, or the door has dropped so the bolt is entering the strike pocket at an angle and rubbing its edge. Occasionally a bent deadbolt lever inside the case adds friction. Cleaning the paint back, adjusting the strike and checking the lever all happen as part of the service.
Can the back door and garage door be put on the same system?
Yes, in one of two ways. Each door can get its own smart lock, all managed from the same app and account, with the same codes working at every door. Or, where the cylinders share a compatible keyway, the other doors can stay mechanical and be rekeyed so a single key operates them and the smart lock's override cylinder alike. Many households do the front door first and add the others later; the account and the codes carry across.
